EFT: Emotional Freedom Technique
What Is Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)?
Tapping is a blend of modern psychology and Chinese acupressure. Often referred to as "Psychological acupressure", the technique works by releasing blockages within the energy system which are the source of emotional discomfort. These blockages in our energy system, in addition to challenging us emotionally, often lead to limiting beliefs and an inability to live life comfortably. An EFT treatment involves the use of fingertips rather than needles to tap on the end points of energy meridians that are situated just beneath the surface of the skin. I love this technique because it requires zero medications, often works when nothing else seems to, can be self-applied which makes it super easy, and it's free! This is my personal favorite (unconventional) way to release pain, anxiety & other energetic blockages from my body. I highly recommend giving it a try!
How does it work?
All negative emotions are felt through a disruption of the body’s energy. And physical pain and disease are intricately connected to negative emotions. Health problems create feedback – physical symptoms cause emotional distress, and unresolved emotional problems manifest themselves through physical symptoms. So, the body’s health must be approached as a whole. You cannot treat the symptoms without addressing the cause, and vice-versa.
The body, like everything in the universe, is composed of energy. Restore balance to the body’s energy, and you will mend the negative emotions and physical symptoms that stem from the energy disruption. Tapping restores the body’s energy balance, and negative emotions are conquered.
The basic technique requires you to focus on the negative emotion at hand: a fear or anxiety, a bad memory, an unresolved problem, or anything that’s bothering you. While maintaining your mental focus on this issue, use your fingertips to tap 5-7 times each on 12 of the body’s meridian points. Tapping on these meridian points – while concentrating on accepting and resolving the negative emotion – will access your body’s energy, restoring it to a balanced state. (The Tapping Solution).
1. While continuously tapping the Karate Chop point, say “Even though I have this ____ (stress, pain, headache, etc.), I deeply and completely accept myself.”
2. For the rest of the points: tap each one 5-10 times while repeating only the reminder phrase, “this ____” (whatever your ailment was).
3. Take a deep breath, then repeat the cycle several times until the situation/pain becomes more manageable.
Here are some examples:
“Even though I feel this anxiety, I deeply and completely accept myself.”
“Even though I’m anxious about my interview, I deeply and completely accept myself.”
“Even though I’m feeling this anxiety about my financial situation, I deeply and completely accept myself.”
“Even though I have a headache, I deeply and completely accept myself. ”
"Even though when I bend over I get this shooting pain in my lower back that makes me want to cry, I deeply and completely accept myself."
You can even throw in some positive affirmations!
I am okay as I am
I validate myself
I am worthy of love
I am okay with myself
I am open to new freedom and joy
I am true to myself
I take care of myself
I end relationships that cannot be healthy
I am living my life fully
I speak my truth
